Little Singapore

Little Singapore, Sunnybank

Hmm... after consuming only muesli bars, carrots and some chocolates during the long hike in Springbrook National Park, no doubt my stomach started to growl on the way home. Luckily, one of the guys suggested to have dinner before getting home. Phew!

Then it came to the time of deciding where to go ... I hate this part when you don't have any particular place you want to visit and we want it to be cheap, fast and still open during the night (it was 8ish that time). Well, I think Sunnybank does fit the criteria above!

Finally, the three of us stepped into Little Singapore. I have been here a few times and do enjoy the food they served (roti canai, nasi lemak but not the bak kut teh though). Glancing the menu, AS was quick to decide that he wanted the 'Malaysian Char Kway Teow'. Dammit, that was my first choice! We also ordered a dry curry noodle with chicken and BBQ pork and one of their specialties dish : Hainanese chicken rice.

Dry curry noodle with chicken and BBQ pork - $11.20

Hainanese Chicken Rice - $9.50

Malaysian Char Kway Teow - $11.50

The winner of the night was char kway teow! It was cooked to near perfection, with the perfect balance of saltiness from the soya sauce and sweetness from the Chinese sausage 'lap cheong'. Guess what? You can even taste bits of crunchy pieces of pork lard and that made me think that this dish is quite authentic. We love it! Even a white guy said it's good. :)

Hainanese chicken rice was pretty good too. It was not served with plain rice but with aromatic rice possibly cooked in chicken broth. The chicken pieces were tender and tasted quite similar to the ones I had back home. Well, I will like this dish better if it was the roasted type; I don't really fancy boiled, cold chicken skin.

The dry curry noodle was all right. The spiciness of the curry was just right but it just didn't have the 'Wow factor' as the other two.

Overall, we had a good time here although it can be a little noisy since tables are quite close to your dining neighbours. Mind you, the servings here are huge! The three of couldn't finish all of it and have to pack some home. And don't forget, most restaurants in Sunnybank accept cash only including Little Singapore.
