Taste of Penang

Taste of Penang, Sunnybank Hills
It looks like Malaysian cuisine style restaurants are popping out in Brisbane recently, which I have yet to visit. Well, Taste of Penang (ToP) has been my favourite Malaysian restaurant to date, and even better, when it is specialising in Penang's food (my hometown!).

On one weekend, I took the in-laws to try out some food from ToP. Unfortunately Mr was working then but he certainly did not miss out when we took some take-aways for him. Do not expect ToP to be a five-star quality restaurant when you first arrive. The tables and fold-chairs are arranged outside the corridor, and ordering is make simple by filling up the paper menu.

There are a few 'must order' from ToP and one of them is the 'Lor Bak', which is five-spiced marinated pork rolled in tofu skin and then fried. The taste is very similar to the ones back in Penang and we certainly enjoyed it. The next one is 'Chee Cheong Fun' (not the Hong Kong style with the soya sauce) but this one is served with sweet sauce and shrimp sauce. Those not familiar with shrimp sauce may not like it but it suits me very well. :)

Another entree worth mentioning is the 'Fried Tofu'. They were deeply fried and crispy, served with fresh sliced cucumbers with sweet and sour chilli sauce.

Well, next to the mains! We ordered a few variety and they include the 'Nasi Lemak', 'Wat Tan Hor aka Char Hor Fun', 'Mee Goreng' and lastly the 'Char Koay Teow'. The overall winner for us was the char koay teow and mee goreng. CKT is my must have everytime I visit ToP. It was our first time trying the mee goreng and it is certainly pretty close to the ones back home.

The nasi lemak with chicken curry was all right and the hor fun was pretty good, with the hor fun having the 'wok hei'. Overall, we really enjoyed our time in ToP and I will have to bring Mr to this place one day!
